I recently wrote an article called New Year, New Weight Loss Plan. In it, I credit my sister Jessica for inspiring me to get serious about losing weight and becoming healthier. I asked Jessica if she would write an article to tell the readers a little about her story. Hopefully, this will inspire you as much as it did me.
I have struggled with my weight for many years, especially after having two children. I used the excuse “baby weight” for far too long, my children are ten and six! I would promise myself year after year that I was going to lose weight, but would never actually try.
I was suffering from many health problems, some due to my weight and diet. On Labor Day 2013, I was in the ER with chest pains. (Thank God it turned out to be nothing serious!) They weighed me and I was shocked that the scale read 261! Now, at the time I did not own a scale and was not quite sure of my exact weight. Seeing that number was a real wake up call for me. I thought “shame on me” and I knew that I wanted to live a long life so my children would have their Mom around.
A week after that, while still having various health issues, I texted my older sister Jennifer and told her about the problems I had been having. She had gone through similar issues the previous year and she decided to bring some groceries over. She showed me how to make this really tasty smoothie that was FULL of antioxidants! She also told me about the diet changes that she had made that helped her to feel better!
That was the day that I officially started my diet! It was not easy at first, but I stuck with it. One of the main things I did was cut out sugars and white flour. Also, I stayed anywhere from 1000-1200 calories a day. I had plenty of protein and fiber on a daily basis and drank nothing but water.
In addition, I started eating lots of veggies and drank my smoothie every morning. Eating small snacks between meals helped me stay on track. I also began walking in the morning and that gave me extra energy!
The first week, I lost 7 pounds. The second week, I lost another 7 pounds. I could not believe how easy it turned out to be! I realized that if I stayed focused, I could lose the weight! I had to always remember that I didn’t get sick overnight and I was not going to get well overnight, but over time my health would start to improve.
As I lost the weight, I started to see some improvements. My back was starting to feel better, arthritis pain was lessening, and my psoriasis started to improve because of my diet changes.
My goal is to ultimately lose 100 pounds and so far, since September, I have lost 56! Trust me, if I can do it so can you! I like to call my new attitude a “lifestyle change” rather than a “diet”. I cannot see myself ever going back to my old bad habits!
